My name is Peter Northey I am Deaf non verbal first Nation man.
On the 23rd of Dec 2023 I made an on line purchase from your Rockhampton store and went in to the restaurant to collect my items.
I went to the counter and showed the sour looking girl my card stating I was Deaf and showed her my phone with the order number smiled at her and stood back and waited.
I noticed the numbers were not coming up on the screen so after about 20 minutes of waiting my phone notified me my order had been filled and the number disappeared.
I approached the girl again to find out what was going on and asked for the manager. I asked the manager for her first name and she refused to give it to me. The reason I asked for a name was so I had a reference to whom I spoke to about my complaint.
The manager not only refused to give me a first name but she went on to mock me. Yelling he can read lips and stating to customers look I can do sign language as well. Then preceded to mock my First language in front of me and about 20 customers.
One customer had had enough of me being abused and ridiculed and stepped up to help. She was appalled at the way I was being treated and the Cultural discrimination I received was a disgrace. She gave me her name to me and said she was disgusted at the managers treatment of me. Mocking and ridiculing a DEAF NON VERBAL man.
I will be submitting a complaint to the Human Rights body as soon as I sent this email. Your so called manager does not know the extent of my disability and as stated on my Deaf card I can only lip read some people and defiantly not while they are abusing mocking and stressing me.
I will be recommending your company do some Deaf Awareness training and the manager complete a Deaf Awareness course.
I have been left traumatised and my confidence in being independent in the community has been shattered. I feel like I have been belittled and the target of a hateful person. I have submitted to the Human Rights Commission and require video footage of this.
